You charter an electric yacht at Natural Yachts but where can you charge it? At a charging station? How long does it take and how much does it cost to fully charge the battery pack? In this blog we, Jurjen and Sarah of Team Natural Yachts, answer the most frequently asked questions about electric boating and the use of an electric boat.
A new routine
Imagine, you start your boating holiday in beautiful Friesland. You have planned a nice route and you are excited to begin your boating trip. You start the engine... and you still experience the peace and quiet around you that was there before the start. The electric motor is not only quiet in use but also very powerful. You have more than enough power for manoeuvring and boating at speed if necessary.
During your boating trip you come across a charming town, it is time to moor and do some groceries. You can now make double use of this 'mooring time'. If you connect the boat to the shore power, you can recharge the boat and increase your boating range.
Frequently asked questions:
Where can I find charging stations in Friesland? Unlike electric cars, you don't have to look for special charging stations. In all harbours or at municipal moorings there are easy accessible shore power connections available that allow you to recharge the battery pack. At most moorings you can use a standard 16 amp shore power connection. When the connection is below 16 ampere, you can easily adjust this on the boat, charging will only take a little longer.
How do you pay for shore power? And how much does it cost?
How you pay for shore power depends on where you are. Sometimes you have to pay per kWh in advance with coins at other harbours you can pay with a harbour pass or its included in the cost of an overnight stay. To be on the safe side, always bring some coins with you. It varies per facility but on average you will need € 5 euro for recharging the battery pack. This allows you to make a boating trip of over 60 km at normal cruising speed. Electric boating is not only very comfortable boating, it is also cheaper compared to diesel.
Where can I charge my electric boat?
Electric boating is not only cheaper compared to diesel, recharging is also much easier! Since shore power is available in all harbours and at most moorings, you almost do not have to plan or think about where to charge. In fact, you can just simply recharge while visiting a village or during the night while you sleep.
When should I recharge my electric boat?
You can see the voltage of the battery pack on the dashboard of your boat. If we take the Northman Nexus Revo 870 as example. You can read the status of the battery pack from the information panel. Giving you all the information you need to plan your next leg.
How long does it take to recharge the battery pack?
Some time is needed to recharge all batteries of (for example) the Northman Nexus Revo 870. If you are connected to a 16 amp shore power connection, it will take 10 hours for the battery pack to go from low to full. Most of the time the battery pack is not completely empty and will be fully charged again after 5 to 6 hours.
How long can I boat when the battery pack is completely charged? With the battery pack of the Nexus Revo 870, you can make a good boating day of 6-12 hours, or a 50 - 75 km boating trip where you can visit several lakes and towns. If you recharge a little in between, you can even make longer trips.
